Where Oh Where is Maria’s Niche?

The Passion Project

Hi. My name is Maria and I’m a stay at home mom for the moment. I say for the moment because my situation is such that I’m required to either get a job outside the home or find a way to work from home. Here’s my story.

As I said before, my name is Maria and I’m a native New Yorker. I have four children and am happily married to another native New Yorker. My husband had a small business in New York City for almost twenty years. During that time, I was able to work for him from home typing his invoices and some letters. Unfortunately, due to forces beyond his control, mainly technology advancing him out of a job, we made the decision to move from New York to Ohio. His brother is in Ohio and my husband thought it would be good for all of us to be near family. He also thought he could get a job at the same company as his brother, which he was able to do, thankfully.

The first year was difficult in that he was a salesman on commission which is a pretty difficult place to be, in my opinion. The second year has been better in that his job has been switched to a more lucrative position which has also allowed him to make use of his many talents. We are now almost done with year number three which is the present and this is where I come back into the picture.

I’ve been able to stay at home to get my children settled. I’ve worked a few small jobs outside the home doing data entry and working as a substitute secretary and teachers’ assistant at the local schools. Here is my dilemma. I have two daughters in college, one son in tenth grade and a daughter in seventh grade. I don’t want to go outside the home to work and leave my children but I have to work in order to bring in the balance of money that we need to meet our obligations.

My dream has always been to stay at home and do the things I enjoy, whether for money or charity or both. The things I love are machine embroidery, machine knitting, embellishing clothing with paints and Swarovski Crystals and creating Swarovski Jewelry. They all seem to go together in my mind but they are not going to bring in an income. So the question is this; how do I make money from home without leaving my kids, still get my housework done and do the things I love at the same time? I’m not quite Hamlet but that is my question.

It can take time to figure out what your passions are and then how to build a business around them. Once you get more clarity on the subject, you will then start to be able to figure out a plan that will get you to where you want to be whilst still maintaining your family’s financial stability.
